How to book California golf tee times

California tee sheets run on three different systems, and mixing them up is how golfers lose their mornings. City-owned municipal courses use rolling booking windows with resident priority. Resort courses open tee times first to overnight guests. Private clubs stay closed to the public with rare exceptions. Know which system your course uses before you set your alarm.

The practical rule is simple: the more famous the course, the earlier you must act, and the closer you read the official booking page. Third-party sites resell many California tee times at a markup, while the course website always shows the real inventory first. Start at the source, every time.

Municipal courses: Torrey Pines and Harding Park

Torrey Pines is owned by the city of San Diego, and its booking reflects that. San Diego residents get lower rates and an earlier booking window, while visitors book later at full price. Weekend mornings on the South course routinely sell out within minutes of the visitor window opening. Weekday mornings last longer, and the North course almost always has wider availability than the South.

TPC Harding Park in San Francisco works similarly as a city-owned facility that hosts professional events, including the 2020 PGA Championship. Advance booking opens on a rolling window, and fog-season mornings play soft and slow. For both courses, create the online account days before your window opens, save payment details, and log in ten minutes early. Our Torrey Pines guide walks through the South and North choice in detail.

  • Make the booking account in advance, since new-account verification can eat the minutes that decide a weekend slot.
  • Target Tuesday through Thursday for the widest choice, and accept afternoon times on Friday through Sunday.
  • Book the North or the second-tier municipal as a backup hold if the site allows free cancellation inside the policy.
  • Screenshot every confirmation number, because phone staff resolve disputes from confirmation codes.

Resort courses: Pebble Beach and PGA West

Resort courses protect their overnight guests. At Pebble Beach, resort guests access the earliest booking dates, and non-guest play opens closer in. Staying one night inside the resort can cost less than the markup and stress of chasing a single outside tee time, and guests also get priority for replays. Read the current stay-and-play terms on the official site, since the exact windows change by season.

PGA West in La Quinta works through its resort and affiliated courses with seasonal demand curves. Winter mornings from January through March are the hardest slots of the year, while summer mornings are wide open and deeply discounted. Shoulder months of April, October, and November split the difference with warm weather and real availability. Call the golf shop directly for groups of 8 or more, since group blocks never appear correctly online.

Booking tip: For any resort course, compare one night of lodging against two days of outside green fees before deciding. The guest window, the replay rate, and the 7 a.m. slot often make the room the cheaper move.

Twilight, singles, and walk-up math

Twilight rates start in the early to mid afternoon and discount the round against the risk of not finishing. In June a 3 p.m. start in Monterey still gets 18 holes done before the 8 p.m. sunset. In December a 2 p.m. start in San Diego runs out of light near the 15th hole. Check the sunset time for your exact date before booking twilight, and treat anything after 2 p.m. in winter as a 12-hole bonus round.

Single golfers have a quiet advantage. Most California pro shops keep a waitlist for singles and pair them into open foursomes on the day. Arrive 60 to 90 minutes early, sign the singles sheet, and bring a book. Weekend mornings that show zero availability online still absorb a patient single more often than not.

Cancellation policies and rebooking

High-end California courses enforce cancellation deadlines with real charges, commonly 7 to 30 days out for resort courses and 48 to 72 hours for municipals. Read the policy at checkout, not at the course, and calendar the deadline the moment you book. Tournament weeks and aeration schedules override normal inventory, so recheck the course maintenance calendar one week before travel.

If your date sells out, set a daily check routine rather than giving up. Business travelers cancel resort rounds 3 to 5 days out when meetings shift, and municipal slots reappear the evening before as groups shrink. Tuesday and Wednesday evenings are the best times to refresh a sold-out weekend sheet.

A booking sequence that never fails

  1. List courses in priority order and note which system each one uses.
  2. Create online accounts at every municipal course at least a week early.
  3. Book the anchor round the minute its window opens, then lodging, then the rest.
  4. Hold one cancellable backup round for the same morning as the anchor.
  5. Recheck confirmations, maintenance calendars, and sunset times seven days out.

Tee times reward the prepared. Ten minutes of account setup beats ten days of refreshing a sold-out page.
